Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
This verse states the subject on which he afterwards expands. Four species or stages of locusts, rather than four different insects, are meant (compare Lev 11:22). Literally, (1) the gnawing locust; (2) the swarming locust; (3) the licking locust; (4) the consuming locust; forming a climax to the most destructive kind. The last is often three inches long, and the two antennÃ&brvbr;, each an inch long. The two hinder of its six feet are larger than the rest, adapting it for leaping. The first "kind" is that of the locust, having just emerged from the egg in spring, and without wings. The second is when at the end of spring, still in their first skin, the locusts put forth little ones without legs or wings. The third, when after their third casting of the old skin, they get small wings, which enable them to leap the better, but not to fly. Being unable to go away till their wings are matured, they devour all before them, grass, shrubs, and bark of trees: translated "rough caterpillars" (Jer 51:27). The fourth kind, the matured winged locusts (see on Nah 3:16). In Joe 2:25 they are enumerated in the reverse order, where the restoration of the devastations caused by them is promised. The Hebrews make the first species refer to Assyria and Babylon; the second species, to Medo-Persia; the third, to Greco-Macedonia and Antiochus Epiphanes; the fourth, to the Romans. Though the primary reference be to literal locusts, the Holy Spirit doubtless had in view the successive empires which assailed Judea, each worse than its predecessor, Rome being the climax. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
That which the palmerworm hath left, hath the locust eaten - The creatures here spoken of are different kinds of locusts, so named from their number or voracity. We, who are free from this scourge of God, know them only by the generic name of locusts. But the law mentions several sorts of locusts, each after its kind, which might be eaten . In fact, above eighty different kinds of locusts have been observed , some of which are twice as large as that which is the ordinary scourge of God . Slight as they are in themselves, they are mighty in God's Hand; beautiful and gorgeous as they are, floating in the sun's rays , they are a scourge, including other plagues, famine, and often, pestilence.
Of the four kinds, here named by the prophet, that rendered "locust" is so called from its multitude, (from where Jeremiah says "they are more numerous than the locust" See Jdg 6:5; Jdg 7:12; Psa 105:34; Nah 3:15. It is a proverb in Arabic also)), and is, probably, the creature which desolates whole regions of Asia and Africa. The rest are named from their voracity, the "gnawer," "licker," "consumer," but they are, beyond doubt, distinct kinds of that destroyer. And this is the characteristic of the prophet's threatening, that he foretells a succession of destroyers, each more fatal than the preceding; and that, not according to the order of nature. For in all the observations which have been made of the locusts, even when successive flights have desolated the same land, they have always been successive clouds of the same creature.
Over and above the fact, then, that locusts are a heavy chastisement from God, these words of Joel form a sort of sacred proverb. They are the epitome of his whole prophecy. It is "this" which he had called the old men to hear, and to say whether they had known anything like "this;" that scourge came after scourge, judgment after judgment, until man yielded or perished. The visitation of locusts was one of the punishments threatened in the law, "Thou shall carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in, for the locust shall consume it" Deu 28:38. It was one of God's ordinary punishments for sin, in that country, like famine, or pestilence, or blight, or mildew, or murrain, or (in this) potato disease. Solomon, accordingly, at the dedication of the temple mentions the locust among the other plagues, which he then solemnly entreated God to remove, when individuals or the whole people should spread forth their hands in penitence toward that house Kg1 8:37-38.
But the characteristic of "this" prophecy is the successiveness of the judgments, each in itself, desolating, and the later following quick upon the earlier, and completing their destructiveness. The judgments of God are linked together by an invisible chain, each drawing on the other; yet, at each link of the lengthening chain, allowing space and time for repentance to break it through. So in the plagues of Egypt, God, "executing His judgments upon them by little and little, gave them time for repentance" (Wisd. 12:10); yet, when Pharaoh hardened his heart, each followed on the other, until he perished in the Red Sea. In like way God said, "him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay" Kg1 19:17. So, in the Revelation, the "trumpets" are sounded Rev 8:1-13; Rev. 9; Rev 11:15, and "the vials of the wrath of God are poured out upon the earth, one after the other" Rev. 16. Actual locusts were very likely one of the scourges intended by the prophet. They certainly were not the whole; but pictured others fiercer, more desolating, more overwhelming. The proverbial dress gained and fixed people's attention on the truth, which, if it had been presented to the people nakedly, they might have turned from. Yet as, in God's wisdom, what is said generally, is often fulfilled specially, so here there were four great invaders which in succession wasted Judah; the Assyrian, Chaldaean, Macedonian and Roman.
Morally, also, four chief passions desolate successively the human heart. : "For what is designated by the "palmerworm," which creeps with all its body on the ground, except it be lust, which so pollutes the heart which it possesses, that it cannot rise up to the love of heavenly purity? What is expressed by the "locust," which flies by leaps, except vain glory which exalts itself with empty presumptions? What is typified by the "cankerworm," almost the whole of whose body is gathered into its belly, except gluttony in eating? What but anger is indicated by mildew, which burns as it touches? What the "palmerworm" then "hath left the locust heath eaten," because, when the sin of lust has retired from the mind, vain glory often succeeds. For since it is not now subdued by the love of the flesh, it boasts of itself, as if it were holy through its chastity. "And that which the locust hath left, the cankerworm hath eaten," because when vain glory, which came, as it were, from holiness, is resisted, either the appetite, or some ambitious desires are indulged in too immoderately. For the mind which knows not God, is led the more fiercely to any object of ambition, in proportion as it is not restrained by any love of human praise. "That which the cankerworm hath left," the mildew consumes, because when the gluttony of the belly is restrained by abstinence, the impatience of anger holds fiercer sway, which, like mildew, eats up the harvest by burning it, because the flame of impatience withers the fruit of virtue. When then some vices succeed to others, one plague devours the field of the mind, while another leaves it." |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
palmerworm
The palmerworm, locust, etc, are thought to be different forms, at different stages of development, of one insect. The essential fact is that, according to the usual method of the Spirit in prophecy, some local circumstance is shown to be of spiritual significance, and is made the occasion of a far-reaching prophecy (for example) (Isa 7:1-14) where the Syrian invasion and the unbelief of Ahaz give occasion to the great prophecy of verse 14 (Joe 1:14). Here in Joel a plague of devouring insects is shown to have spiritual significance (Joe 1:13); (Joe 1:14) and is made the occasion of the prophecy of the day of the Lord, not yet fulfilled.
(See Scofield) - (Isa 2:12).
This is more developed in Joel 2, where the literal locusts are left behind, and the future day of Jehovah fills the scene.
The whole picture is of the end-time of this present age, of the "times of the Gentiles" (Luk 21:24); (Rev 16:14) of the battle of Armageddon; (Rev 16:14); (Rev 19:11-21) of the regathering of Israel.
(See Scofield) - (Rom 11:26)
and of kingdom blessing. It is remarkable that Joel, coming at the very beginning of written prophecy (B.C. 836), gives the fullest view of the consummation of all written prophecy.
The order of events is:
(1) The invasion of Palestine from the north by Gentile world-powers headed up under the Beast and false prophet (Joe 2:1-10) "Armageddon,"
(See Scofield) - (Rev 16:14).
(2) the Lord's army and destruction of the invaders (Joe 2:11); (Rev 19:11-21).
(3) the repentance of Judah in the land (Joe 2:12-17).
(See Scofield) - (Deu 30:3).
(4) the answer of Jehovah (Joe 2:18-27).
(5) the effusion of the Spirit in the (Jewish) "last days" (Joe 2:28); (Joe 2:29).
(6) the return of the Lord in glory and the setting up of the kingdom (Joe 2:30-32); (Act 15:15-17) by the regathering of the nation and judgment of the nations (Joe 3:1-16).
(7) full and permanent kingdom blessing (Joe 3:17-21); (Zac 14:1-21).
(See Scofield) - (Mat 25:32). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Palmer - worm - Four sorts of insects, are here mentioned, which succeeded each other, and devoured all that might be a support to the Jews, whence ensued a grievous famine. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
That which the palmerworm hath left - Here he begins to open his message, and the words he chooses show that he is going to announce a devastation of the land by locusts, and a famine consequent on their depredations. What the different insects may be which he specifies is not easy to determine. I shall give the words of the original, with their etymology.
The palmerworm, גזם gazam, from the same root, to cut short; probably the caterpillar, or some such blight, from its cutting the leaves of the trees into pieces for its nourishment.
The locust, ארבה arbeh, from רבה rabah, to multiply, from the immense increase and multitude of this insect.
Cankerworm, ילק yelek, from לק lak, to lick or lap with the tongue; the reference is uncertain.
Caterpillar, חסיל chasil, from חסל chasal, to consume, to eat up, the consumer. Bishop Newcome translates the first grasshopper; the second, locust; the third, devouring locust; and the fourth, consuming locust. After all that has been said by interpreters concerning these four animals, I am fully of opinion that the arbeh, or locust himself, is the gazam, the yelek, and the chasil and that these different names are used here by the prophet to point out the locust in its different states, or progress from embryo to full growth. See the note on Joe 2:2 (note). |
25 And I will restore [07999] to you the years [08141] that the locust [0697] hath eaten [0398], the cankerworm [03218], and the caterpiller [02625], and the palmerworm [01501], my great [01419] army [02428] which I sent [07971] among you.
16 Thou hast multiplied [07235] thy merchants [07402] above the stars [03556] of heaven [08064]: the cankerworm [03218] spoileth [06584], and flieth away [05774].
27 Set ye up [05375] a standard [05251] in the land [0776], blow [08628] the trumpet [07782] among the nations [01471], prepare [06942] the nations [01471] against her, call together [08085] against her the kingdoms [04467] of Ararat [0780], Minni [04508], and Ashchenaz [0813]; appoint [06485] a captain [02951] against her; cause the horses [05483] to come up [05927] as the rough [05569] caterpillers [03218].
22 Even these of them ye may eat [0398]; the locust [0697] after his kind [04327], and the bald locust [05556] after his kind [04327], and the beetle [02728] after his kind [04327], and the grasshopper [02284] after his kind [04327].
15 And [2532] the seventh [1442] angel [32] sounded [4537]; and [2532] there were [1096] great [3173] voices [5456] in [1722] heaven [3772], saying [3004], The kingdoms [932] of this world [2889] are become [1096] the kingdoms of our [2257] Lord [2962], and [2532] of his [846] Christ [5547]; and [2532] he shall reign [936] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165].
1 And [2532] when [3753] he had opened [455] the seventh [1442] seal [4973], there was [1096] silence [4602] in [1722] heaven [3772] about the space of [5613] half an hour [2256].
2 And [2532] I saw [1492] the seven [2033] angels [32] which [3739] stood [2476] before [1799] God [2316]; and [2532] to them [846] were given [1325] seven [2033] trumpets [4536].
3 And [2532] another [243] angel [32] came [2064] and [2532] stood [2476] at [1909] the altar [2379], having [2192] a golden [5552] censer [3031]; and [2532] there was given [1325] unto him [846] much [4183] incense [2368], that [2443] he should offer [1325] it with the prayers [4335] of all [3956] saints [40] upon [1909] the golden [5552] altar [2379] which [3588] was before [1799] the throne [2362].
4 And [2532] the smoke [2586] of the incense [2368], which came with the prayers [4335] of the saints [40], ascended up [305] before [1799] God [2316] out of [1537] the angel's [32] hand [5495].
5 And [2532] the angel [32] took [2983] the censer [3031], and [2532] filled [1072] it [846] with [1537] fire [4442] of the altar [2379], and [2532] cast [906] it into [1519] the earth [1093]: and [2532] there were [1096] voices [5456], and [2532] thunderings [1027], and [2532] lightnings [796], and [2532] an earthquake [4578].
6 And [2532] the seven [2033] angels [32] which [3588] had [2192] the seven [2033] trumpets [4536] prepared [2090] themselves [1438] to [2443] sound [4537].
7 [2532] The first [4413] angel [32] sounded [4537], and [2532] there followed [1096] hail [5464] and [2532] fire [4442] mingled [3396] with blood [129], and [2532] they were cast [906] upon [1519] the earth [1093]: and [2532] the third part [5154] of trees [1186] was burnt up [2618], and [2532] all [3956] green [5515] grass [5528] was burnt up [2618].
8 And [2532] the second [1208] angel [32] sounded [4537], and [2532] as it were [5613] a great [3173] mountain [3735] burning [2545] with fire [4442] was cast [906] into [1519] the sea [2281]: and [2532] the third part [5154] of the sea [2281] became [1096] blood [129];
9 And [2532] the third part [5154] of the creatures [2938] which [3588] were in [1722] the sea [2281], and had [2192] life [5590], died [599]; and [2532] the third part [5154] of the ships [4143] were destroyed [1311].
10 And [2532] the third [5154] angel [32] sounded [4537], and [2532] there fell [4098] a great [3173] star [792] from [1537] heaven [3772], burning [2545] as it were [5613] a lamp [2985], and [2532] it fell [4098] upon [1909] the third part [5154] of the rivers [4215], and [2532] upon [1909] the fountains [4077] of waters [5204];
11 And [2532] the name [3686] of the star [792] is called [3004] Wormwood [894]: and [2532] the third part [5154] of the waters [5204] became [1096] [1519] wormwood [894]; and [2532] many [4183] men [444] died [599] of [1537] the waters [5204], because [3754] they were made bitter [4087].
12 And [2532] the fourth [5067] angel [32] sounded [4537], and [2532] the third part [5154] of the sun [2246] was smitten [4141], and [2532] the third part [5154] of the moon [4582], and [2532] the third part [5154] of the stars [792]; so as [2443] the third part [5154] of them [846] was darkened [4654], and [2532] the day [2250] shone [5316] not [3361] for a third part [5154] of it [846], and [2532] the night [3571] likewise [3668].
13 And [2532] I beheld [1492], and [2532] heard [191] an [1520] angel [32] flying [4072] through [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], saying [3004] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], Woe [3759], woe [3759], woe [3759], to the inhabiters [2730] of [1909] the earth [1093] by reason of [1537] the other [3062] voices [5456] of the trumpet [4536] of the three [5140] angels [32], which [3588] are yet [3195] to sound [4537] !
17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth [04422] the sword [02719] of Hazael [02371] shall Jehu [03058] slay [04191]: and him that escapeth [04422] from the sword [02719] of Jehu [03058] shall Elisha [0477] slay [04191].
37 If there be in the land [0776] famine [07458], if there be pestilence [01698], blasting [07711], mildew [03420], locust [0697], or if there be caterpiller [02625]; if their enemy [0341] besiege [06887] them in the land [0776] of their cities [08179]; whatsoever plague [05061], whatsoever sickness [04245] there be;
38 What prayer [08605] and supplication [08467] soever be made by any man [0120], or by all thy people [05971] Israel [03478], which shall know [03045] every man [0376] the plague [05061] of his own heart [03824], and spread forth [06566] his hands [03709] toward this house [01004]:
38 Thou shalt carry [03318] much [07227] seed [02233] out [03318] into the field [07704], and shalt gather [0622] but little [04592] in [0622]; for the locust [0697] shall consume [02628] it.
15 There shall the fire [0784] devour [0398] thee; the sword [02719] shall cut thee off [03772], it shall eat thee up [0398] like the cankerworm [03218]: make thyself many [03513] as the cankerworm [03218], make thyself many [03513] as the locusts [0697].
34 He spake [0559], and the locusts [0697] came [0935], and caterpillers [03218], and that without number [04557],
12 And the Midianites [04080] and the Amalekites [06002] and all the children [01121] of the east [06924] lay [05307] along in the valley [06010] like grasshoppers [0697] for multitude [07230]; and their camels [01581] were without number [04557], as the sand [02344] by the sea [03220] side [08193] for multitude [07230].
5 For they came up [05927] with their cattle [04735] and their tents [0168], and they came [0935] [0935] as [01767] grasshoppers [0697] for multitude [07230]; for both they and their camels [01581] were without number [04557]: and they entered [0935] into the land [0776] to destroy [07843] it.
32 And [2532] before [1715] him [846] shall be gathered [4863] all [3956] nations [1484]: and [2532] he shall separate [873] them [846] one [240] from [575] another [240], as [5618] a shepherd [4166] divideth [873] his sheep [4263] from [575] the goats [2056]:
1 Behold, the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] cometh [0935], and thy spoil [07998] shall be divided [02505] in the midst [07130] of thee.
2 For I will gather [0622] all nations [01471] against Jerusalem [03389] to battle [04421]; and the city [05892] shall be taken [03920], and the houses [01004] rifled [08155], and the women [0802] ravished [07901] [07693]; and half [02677] of the city [05892] shall go forth [03318] into captivity [01473], and the residue [03499] of the people [05971] shall not be cut off [03772] from the city [05892].
3 Then shall the LORD [03068] go forth [03318], and fight [03898] against those nations [01471], as when [03117] he fought [03898] in the day [03117] of battle [07128].
4 And his feet [07272] shall stand [05975] in that day [03117] upon the mount [02022] of Olives [02132], which is before [06440] Jerusalem [03389] on the east [06924], and the mount [02022] of Olives [02132] shall cleave [01234] in the midst [02677] thereof toward the east [04217] and toward the west [03220], and there shall be a very [03966] great [01419] valley [01516]; and half [02677] of the mountain [02022] shall remove [04185] toward the north [06828], and half [02677] of it toward the south [05045].
5 And ye shall flee [05127] to the valley [01516] of the mountains [02022]; for the valley [01516] of the mountains [02022] shall reach [05060] unto Azal [0682]: yea, ye shall flee [05127], like as ye fled [05127] from before [06440] the earthquake [07494] in the days [03117] of Uzziah [05818] king [04428] of Judah [03063]: and the LORD [03068] my God [0430] shall come [0935], and all the saints [06918] with thee.
6 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the light [0216] shall not be clear [03368], nor dark [07087] [07087]:
7 But it shall be one [0259] day [03117] which shall be known [03045] to the LORD [03068], not day [03117], nor night [03915]: but it shall come to pass, that at evening [06153] time [06256] it shall be light [0216].
8 And it shall be in that day [03117], that living [02416] waters [04325] shall go out [03318] from Jerusalem [03389]; half [02677] of them toward the former [06931] sea [03220], and half [02677] of them toward the hinder [0314] sea [03220]: in summer [07019] and in winter [02779] shall it be.
9 And the LORD [03068] shall be king [04428] over all the earth [0776]: in that day [03117] shall there be one [0259] LORD [03068], and his name [08034] one [0259].
10 All the land [0776] shall be turned [05437] as a plain [06160] from Geba [01387] to Rimmon [07417] south [05045] of Jerusalem [03389]: and it shall be lifted up [07213], and inhabited [03427] in her place, from Benjamin's [01144] gate [08179] unto the place [04725] of the first [07223] gate [08179], unto the corner [06434] gate [08179], and from the tower [04026] of Hananeel [02606] unto the king's [04428] winepresses [03342].
11 And men shall dwell [03427] in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction [02764]; but Jerusalem [03389] shall be safely [0983] inhabited [03427].
12 And this shall be the plague [04046] wherewith the LORD [03068] will smite [05062] all the people [05971] that have fought [06633] against Jerusalem [03389]; Their flesh [01320] shall consume away [04743] while they stand [05975] upon their feet [07272], and their eyes [05869] shall consume away [04743] in their holes [02356], and their tongue [03956] shall consume away [04743] in their mouth [06310].
13 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that a great [07227] tumult [04103] from the LORD [03068] shall be among them; and they shall lay hold [02388] every one [0376] on the hand [03027] of his neighbour [07453], and his hand [03027] shall rise up [05927] against the hand [03027] of his neighbour [07453].
14 And Judah [03063] also shall fight [03898] at Jerusalem [03389]; and the wealth [02428] of all the heathen [01471] round about [05439] shall be gathered together [0622], gold [02091], and silver [03701], and apparel [0899], in great [03966] abundance [07230].
15 And so shall be the plague [04046] of the horse [05483], of the mule [06505], of the camel [01581], and of the ass [02543], and of all the beasts [0929] that shall be in these [01992] tents [04264], as this plague [04046].
16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left [03498] of all the nations [01471] which came [0935] against Jerusalem [03389] shall even go up [05927] from [01767] year [08141] to year [08141] to worship [07812] the King [04428], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], and to keep [02287] the feast [02282] of tabernacles [05521].
17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up [05927] of all the families [04940] of the earth [0776] unto Jerusalem [03389] to worship [07812] the King [04428], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], even upon them shall be no rain [01653].
18 And if the family [04940] of Egypt [04714] go not up [05927], and come [0935] not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague [04046], wherewith the LORD [03068] will smite [05062] the heathen [01471] that come not up [05927] to keep [02287] the feast [02282] of tabernacles [05521].
19 This shall be the punishment [02403] of Egypt [04714], and the punishment [02403] of all nations [01471] that come not up [05927] to keep [02287] the feast [02282] of tabernacles [05521].
20 In that day [03117] shall there be upon the bells [04698] of the horses [05483], HOLINESS [06944] UNTO THE LORD [03068]; and the pots [05518] in the LORD'S [03068] house [01004] shall be like the bowls [04219] before [06440] the altar [04196].
21 Yea, every pot [05518] in Jerusalem [03389] and in Judah [03063] shall be holiness [06944] unto the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635]: and all they that sacrifice [02076] shall come [0935] and take [03947] of them, and seethe [01310] therein: and in that day [03117] there shall be no more the Canaanite [03669] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
17 So shall ye know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068] your God [0430] dwelling [07931] in Zion [06726], my holy [06944] mountain [02022]: then shall Jerusalem [03389] be holy [06944], and there shall no strangers [02114] pass through [05674] her any more.
18 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the mountains [02022] shall drop down [05197] new wine [06071], and the hills [01389] shall flow [03212] with milk [02461], and all the rivers [0650] of Judah [03063] shall flow [03212] with waters [04325], and a fountain [04599] shall come forth [03318] of the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], and shall water [08248] the valley [05158] of Shittim [07851].
19 Egypt [04714] shall be a desolation [08077], and Edom [0123] shall be a desolate [08077] wilderness [04057], for the violence [02555] against the children [01121] of Judah [03063], because they have shed [08210] innocent [05355] blood [01818] in their land [0776].
20 But Judah [03063] shall dwell [03427] for ever [05769], and Jerusalem [03389] from generation [01755] to generation [01755].
21 For I will cleanse [05352] their blood [01818] that I have not cleansed [05352]: for the LORD [03068] dwelleth [07931] in Zion [06726].
1 For, behold, in those days [03117], and in that time [06256], when I shall bring again [07725] [07725] the captivity [07622] of Judah [03063] and Jerusalem [03389],
2 I will also gather [06908] all nations [01471], and will bring them down [03381] into the valley [06010] of Jehoshaphat [03092], and will plead [08199] with them there for my people [05971] and for my heritage [05159] Israel [03478], whom they have scattered [06340] among the nations [01471], and parted [02505] my land [0776].
3 And they have cast [03032] lots [01486] for my people [05971]; and have given [05414] a boy [03206] for an harlot [02181], and sold [04376] a girl [03207] for wine [03196], that they might drink [08354].
4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre [06865], and Zidon [06721], and all the coasts [01552] of Palestine [06429]? will ye render [07999] me a recompence [01576]? and if ye recompense [01580] me, swiftly [07031] and speedily [04120] will I return [07725] your recompence [01576] upon your own head [07218];
5 Because ye have taken [03947] my silver [03701] and my gold [02091], and have carried [0935] into your temples [01964] my goodly [02896] pleasant things [04261]:
6 The children [01121] also of Judah [03063] and the children [01121] of Jerusalem [03389] have ye sold [04376] unto the Grecians [03125] [01121], that ye might remove them far [07368] from their border [01366].
7 Behold, I will raise [05782] them out of the place [04725] whither ye have sold [04376] them, and will return [07725] your recompence [01576] upon your own head [07218]:
8 And I will sell [04376] your sons [01121] and your daughters [01323] into the hand [03027] of the children [01121] of Judah [03063], and they shall sell [04376] them to the Sabeans [07615], to a people [01471] far off [07350]: for the LORD [03068] hath spoken [01696] it.
9 Proclaim [07121] ye this among the Gentiles [01471]; Prepare [06942] war [04421], wake up [05782] the mighty men [01368], let all the men [0582] of war [04421] draw near [05066]; let them come up [05927]:
10 Beat [03807] your plowshares [0855] into swords [02719], and your pruninghooks [04211] into spears [07420]: let the weak [02523] say [0559], I am strong [01368].
11 Assemble [05789] yourselves, and come [0935], all ye heathen [01471], and gather yourselves together [06908] round about [05439]: thither cause thy mighty ones [01368] to come down [05181], O LORD [03068].
12 Let the heathen [01471] be wakened [05782], and come up [05927] to the valley [06010] of Jehoshaphat [03092]: for there will I sit [03427] to judge [08199] all the heathen [01471] round about [05439].
13 Put [07971] ye in the sickle [04038], for the harvest [07105] is ripe [01310]: come [0935], get you down [03381]; for the press [01660] is full [04390], the fats [03342] overflow [07783]; for their wickedness [07451] is great [07227].
14 Multitudes [01995], multitudes [01995] in the valley [06010] of decision [02742]: for the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] is near [07138] in the valley [06010] of decision [02742].
15 The sun [08121] and the moon [03394] shall be darkened [06937], and the stars [03556] shall withdraw [0622] their shining [05051].
16 The LORD [03068] also shall roar [07580] out of Zion [06726], and utter [05414] his voice [06963] from Jerusalem [03389]; and the heavens [08064] and the earth [0776] shall shake [07493]: but the LORD [03068] will be the hope [04268] of his people [05971], and the strength [04581] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
15 And [2532] to this [5129] agree [4856] the words [3056] of the prophets [4396]; as [2531] it is written [1125],
16 After [3326] this [5023] I will return [390], and [2532] will build again [456] the tabernacle [4633] of David [1138], which [3588] is fallen down [4098]; and [2532] I will build again [456] the ruins [2679] thereof [846], and [2532] I will set [461] it [846] up [461]:
17 That [3704] [302] the residue [2645] of men [444] might seek after [1567] the Lord [2962], and [2532] all [3956] the Gentiles [1484], upon [1909] whom [3739] my [3450] name [3686] is called [1941] [1909] [846], saith [3004] the Lord [2962], who [3588] doeth [4160] all [3956] these things [5023].
30 And I will shew [05414] wonders [04159] in the heavens [08064] and in the earth [0776], blood [01818], and fire [0784], and pillars [08490] of smoke [06227].
31 The sun [08121] shall be turned [02015] into darkness [02822], and the moon [03394] into blood [01818], before [06440] the great [01419] and the terrible [03372] day [03117] of the LORD [03068] come [0935].
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call [07121] on the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] shall be delivered [04422]: for in mount [02022] Zion [06726] and in Jerusalem [03389] shall be deliverance [06413], as the LORD [03068] hath said [0559], and in the remnant [08300] whom the LORD [03068] shall call [07121].
29 And also upon the servants [05650] and upon the handmaids [08198] in those days [03117] will I pour out [08210] my spirit [07307].
28 And it shall come to pass afterward [0310], that I will pour out [08210] my spirit [07307] upon all flesh [01320]; and your sons [01121] and your daughters [01323] shall prophesy [05012], your old men [02205] shall dream [02492] dreams [02472], your young men [0970] shall see [07200] visions [02384]:
18 Then will the LORD [03068] be jealous [07065] for his land [0776], and pity [02550] his people [05971].
19 Yea, the LORD [03068] will answer [06030] and say [0559] unto his people [05971], Behold, I will send [07971] you corn [01715], and wine [08492], and oil [03323], and ye shall be satisfied [07646] therewith: and I will no more make [05414] you a reproach [02781] among the heathen [01471]:
20 But I will remove far off [07368] from you the northern [06830] army, and will drive [05080] him into a land [0776] barren [06723] and desolate [08077], with his face [06440] toward the east [06931] sea [03220], and his hinder part [05490] toward the utmost [0314] sea [03220], and his stink [0889] shall come up [05927], and his ill savour [06709] shall come up [05927], because he hath done [06213] great things [01431].
21 Fear [03372] not, O land [0127]; be glad [01523] and rejoice [08055]: for the LORD [03068] will do [06213] great things [01431].
22 Be not afraid [03372], ye beasts [0929] of the field [07704]: for the pastures [04999] of the wilderness [04057] do spring [01876], for the tree [06086] beareth [05375] her fruit [06529], the fig tree [08384] and the vine [01612] do yield [05414] their strength [02428].
23 Be glad [01523] then, ye children [01121] of Zion [06726], and rejoice [08055] in the LORD [03068] your God [0430]: for he hath given [05414] you the former rain [04175] moderately [06666], and he will cause to come down [03381] for you the rain [01653], the former rain [04175], and the latter rain [04456] in the first [07223] month.
24 And the floors [01637] shall be full [04390] of wheat [01250], and the fats [03342] shall overflow [07783] with wine [08492] and oil [03323].
25 And I will restore [07999] to you the years [08141] that the locust [0697] hath eaten [0398], the cankerworm [03218], and the caterpiller [02625], and the palmerworm [01501], my great [01419] army [02428] which I sent [07971] among you.
26 And ye shall eat [0398] in plenty [0398], and be satisfied [07646], and praise [01984] the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430], that hath dealt [06213] wondrously [06381] with you: and my people [05971] shall never [05769] be ashamed [0954].
27 And ye shall know [03045] that I am in the midst [07130] of Israel [03478], and that I am the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and none else: and my people [05971] shall never [05769] be ashamed [0954].
3 That then the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] will turn [07725] thy captivity [07622], and have compassion [07355] upon thee, and will return [07725] and gather [06908] thee from all the nations [05971], whither the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath scattered [06327] thee.
12 Therefore also now, saith [05002] the LORD [03068], turn [07725] ye even to me with all your heart [03824], and with fasting [06685], and with weeping [01065], and with mourning [04553]:
13 And rend [07167] your heart [03824], and not your garments [0899], and turn [07725] unto the LORD [03068] your God [0430]: for he is gracious [02587] and merciful [07349], slow [0750] to anger [0639], and of great [07227] kindness [02617], and repenteth [05162] him of the evil [07451].
14 Who knoweth [03045] if he will return [07725] and repent [05162], and leave [07604] a blessing [01293] behind [0310] him; even a meat offering [04503] and a drink offering [05262] unto the LORD [03068] your God [0430]?
15 Blow [08628] the trumpet [07782] in Zion [06726], sanctify [06942] a fast [06685], call [07121] a solemn assembly [06116]:
16 Gather [0622] the people [05971], sanctify [06942] the congregation [06951], assemble [06908] the elders [02205], gather [0622] the children [05768], and those that suck [03243] the breasts [07699]: let the bridegroom [02860] go forth [03318] of his chamber [02315], and the bride [03618] out of her closet [02646].
17 Let the priests [03548], the ministers [08334] of the LORD [03068], weep [01058] between the porch [0197] and the altar [04196], and let them say [0559], Spare [02347] thy people [05971], O LORD [03068], and give [05414] not thine heritage [05159] to reproach [02781], that the heathen [01471] should rule over [04910] them: wherefore should they say [0559] among the people [05971], Where is their God [0430]?
11 And [2532] I saw [1492] heaven [3772] opened [455], and [2532] behold [2400] a white [3022] horse [2462]; and [2532] he that sat [2521] upon [1909] him [846] was called [2564] Faithful [4103] and [2532] True [228], and [2532] in [1722] righteousness [1343] he doth judge [2919] and [2532] make war [4170].
12 [1161] His [846] eyes [3788] were as [5613] a flame [5395] of fire [4442], and [2532] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] were many [4183] crowns [1238]; and he had [2192] a name [3686] written [1125], that [3739] no man [3762] knew [1492], but [1508] he himself [846].
13 And [2532] he was clothed [4016] with a vesture [2440] dipped [911] in blood [129]: and [2532] his [846] name [3686] is called [2564] The Word [3056] of God [2316].
14 And [2532] the armies [4753] which were [3588] in [1722] heaven [3772] followed [190] him [846] upon [1909] white [3022] horses [2462], clothed [1746] in fine linen [1039], white [3022] and [2532] clean [2513].
15 And [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] goeth [1607] a sharp [3691] sword [4501], that [2443] with [1722] it [846] he should smite [3960] the nations [1484]: and [2532] he [846] shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]: and [2532] he [846] treadeth [3961] the winepress [3025] [3631] of the fierceness [2372] and [2532] wrath [3709] of Almighty [3841] God [2316].
16 And [2532] he hath [2192] on [1909] his vesture [2440] and [2532] on [1909] his [846] thigh [3382] a name [3686] written [1125], KING [935] OF KINGS [935], AND [2532] LORD [2962] OF LORDS [2962].
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
18 That [2443] ye may eat [5315] the flesh [4561] of kings [935], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of captains [5506], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of mighty men [2478], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of horses [2462], and [2532] of them that sit [2521] on [1909] them [846], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of all [3956] men, both free [1658] and [2532] bond [1401], both [2532] small [3398] and [2532] great [3173].
19 And [2532] I saw [1492] the beast [2342], and [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] their [846] armies [4753], gathered together [4863] to make [4160] war [4171] against [3326] him that sat [2521] on [1909] the horse [2462], and [2532] against [3326] his [846] army [4753].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
11 And the LORD [03068] shall utter [05414] his voice [06963] before [06440] his army [02428]: for his camp [04264] is very [03966] great [07227]: for he is strong [06099] that executeth [06213] his word [01697]: for the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] is great [01419] and very [03966] terrible [03372]; and who can abide [03557] it?
14 For [1063] they are [1526] the spirits [4151] of devils [1142], working [4160] miracles [4592], which go forth [1607] [3739] [1607] unto [1909] the kings [935] of the earth [1093] and [2532] of the whole [3650] world [3625], to gather [4863] them [846] to [1519] the battle [4171] of that [1565] great [3173] day [2250] of God [2316] Almighty [3841].
1 Blow [08628] ye the trumpet [07782] in Zion [06726], and sound an alarm [07321] in my holy [06944] mountain [02022]: let all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] tremble [07264]: for the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] cometh [0935], for it is nigh at hand [07138];
2 A day [03117] of darkness [02822] and of gloominess [0653], a day [03117] of clouds [06051] and of thick darkness [06205], as the morning [07837] spread [06566] upon the mountains [02022]: a great [07227] people [05971] and a strong [06099]; there hath not been [01961] ever [05769] the like, neither shall be any more [03254] after [0310] it, even to the years [08141] of many [01755] generations [01755].
3 A fire [0784] devoureth [0398] before [06440] them; and behind [0310] them a flame [03852] burneth [03857]: the land [0776] is as the garden [01588] of Eden [05731] before [06440] them, and behind [0310] them a desolate [08077] wilderness [04057]; yea, and nothing shall escape [06413] them.
4 The appearance [04758] of them is as the appearance [04758] of horses [05483]; and as horsemen [06571], so shall they run [07323].
5 Like the noise [06963] of chariots [04818] on the tops [07218] of mountains [02022] shall they leap [07540], like the noise [06963] of a flame [03851] of fire [0784] that devoureth [0398] the stubble [07179], as a strong [06099] people [05971] set in battle [04421] array [06186].
6 Before their face [06440] the people [05971] shall be much pained [02342]: all faces [06440] shall gather [06908] blackness [06289].
7 They shall run [07323] like mighty men [01368]; they shall climb [05927] the wall [02346] like men [0582] of war [04421]; and they shall march [03212] every one [0376] on his ways [01870], and they shall not break [05670] their ranks [0734]:
8 Neither shall one [0376] thrust [01766] another [0251]; they shall walk [03212] every one [01397] in his path [04546]: and when they fall [05307] upon the sword [07973], they shall not be wounded [01214].
9 They shall run to and fro [08264] in the city [05892]; they shall run [07323] upon the wall [02346], they shall climb up [05927] upon the houses [01004]; they shall enter in [0935] at the windows [02474] like a thief [01590].
10 The earth [0776] shall quake [07264] before [06440] them; the heavens [08064] shall tremble [07493]: the sun [08121] and the moon [03394] shall be dark [06937], and the stars [03556] shall withdraw [0622] their shining [05051]:
26 And [2532] so [3779] all [3956] Israel [2474] shall be saved [4982]: as [2531] it is written [1125], There shall come [2240] out of [1537] Sion [4622] the Deliverer [4506], and [2532] shall turn away [654] ungodliness [763] from [575] Jacob [2384]:
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
24 And [2532] they shall fall [4098] by the edge [4750] of the sword [3162], and [2532] shall be led away captive [163] into [1519] all [3956] nations [1484]: and [2532] Jerusalem [2419] shall be [2071] trodden down [3961] of [5259] the Gentiles [1484], until [891] the times [2540] of the Gentiles [1484] be fulfilled [4137].
12 For the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall be upon every one that is proud [01343] and lofty [07311], and upon every one that is lifted up [05375]; and he shall be brought low [08213]:
14 Sanctify [06942] ye a fast [06685], call [07121] a solemn assembly [06116], gather [0622] the elders [02205] and all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and cry [02199] unto the LORD [03068],
13 Gird [02296] yourselves, and lament [05594], ye priests [03548]: howl [03213], ye ministers [08334] of the altar [04196]: come [0935], lie all night [03885] in sackcloth [08242], ye ministers [08334] of my God [0430]: for the meat offering [04503] and the drink offering [05262] is withholden [04513] from the house [01004] of your God [0430].
14 Sanctify [06942] ye a fast [06685], call [07121] a solemn assembly [06116], gather [0622] the elders [02205] and all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and cry [02199] unto the LORD [03068],
1 And it came to pass in the days [03117] of Ahaz [0271] the son [01121] of Jotham [03147], the son [01121] of Uzziah [05818], king [04428] of Judah [03063], that Rezin [07526] the king [04428] of Syria [0758], and Pekah [06492] the son [01121] of Remaliah [07425], king [04428] of Israel [03478], went up [05927] toward Jerusalem [03389] to war [04421] against it, but could [03201] not prevail [03898] against it.
2 And it was told [05046] the house [01004] of David [01732], saying [0559], Syria [0758] is confederate [05117] with Ephraim [0669]. And his heart [03824] was moved [05128], and the heart [03824] of his people [05971], as the trees [06086] of the wood [03293] are moved [05128] with [06440] the wind [07307].
3 Then said [0559] the LORD [03068] unto Isaiah [03470], Go forth [03318] now to meet [07125] Ahaz [0271], thou, and Shearjashub [07610] thy son [01121], at the end [07097] of the conduit [08585] of the upper [05945] pool [01295] in the highway [04546] of the fuller's [03526] field [07704];
4 And say [0559] unto him, Take heed [08104], and be quiet [08252]; fear [03372] not, neither be fainthearted [07401] [03824] for the two [08147] tails [02180] of these smoking [06226] firebrands [0181], for the fierce [02750] anger [0639] of Rezin [07526] with Syria [0758], and of the son [01121] of Remaliah [07425].
5 Because Syria [0758], Ephraim [0669], and the son [01121] of Remaliah [07425], have taken evil [07451] counsel [03289] against thee, saying [0559],
6 Let us go up [05927] against Judah [03063], and vex [06973] it, and let us make a breach [01234] therein for us, and set [04427] a king [04428] in the midst [08432] of it, even the son [01121] of Tabeal [02870]:
7 Thus [03541] saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], It shall not stand [06965], neither shall it come to pass.
8 For the head [07218] of Syria [0758] is Damascus [01834], and the head [07218] of Damascus [01834] is Rezin [07526]; and within threescore [08346] and five [02568] years [08141] shall Ephraim [0669] be broken [02865], that it be not a people [05971].
9 And the head [07218] of Ephraim [0669] is Samaria [08111], and the head [07218] of Samaria [08111] is Remaliah's [07425] son [01121]. If ye will not believe [0539], surely ye shall not be established [0539].
10 Moreover the LORD [03068] spake [01696] again [03254] unto Ahaz [0271], saying [0559],
11 Ask [07592] thee a sign [0226] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430]; ask [07592] it either in the depth [06009], or in the height [01361] above [04605].
12 But Ahaz [0271] said [0559], I will not ask [07592], neither will I tempt [05254] [0853] the LORD [03068].
13 And he said [0559], Hear [08085] ye now, O house [01004] of David [01732]; Is it a small thing [04592] for you to weary [03811] men [0582], but will ye weary [03811] my God [0430] also?
14 Therefore the Lord [0136] himself shall give [05414] you a sign [0226]; Behold, a virgin [05959] shall conceive [02030], and bear [03205] a son [01121], and shall call [07121] his name [08034] Immanuel [06005] [0410].
