Verse         Translation Text
Eze 16:8 Strong Concordance Now when I passed [05674] by thee, and looked [07200] upon thee, behold, thy time [06256] was the time [06256] of love [01730]; and I spread [06566] my skirt [03671] over thee, and covered [03680] thy nakedness [06172]: yea, I sware [07650] unto thee, and entered [0935] into a covenant [01285] with thee, saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], and thou becamest mine.
  King James Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.

A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
thy time of love--literally, "loves" (compare Sol 2:10-13). Thou wast of marriageable age, but none was willing to marry thee, naked as thou wast. I then regarded thee with a look of grace when the full time of thy deliverance was come (Gen 15:13-14; Act 7:6-7). It is not she that makes the advance to God, but God to her; she has nothing to entitle her to such notice, yet He regards her not with mere benevolence, but with love, such as one cherishes to the person of his wife (Sol 1:3-6; Jer 31:3; Mal 1:2).

spread my skirt over thee--the mode of espousals (Rut 3:9). I betrothed thee (Deu 4:37; Deu 10:15; Hos 11:1). The cloak is often used as a bed coverlet in the East. God explains what He means, "I entered into . . . covenant with thee," that is, at Sinai. So Israel became "the wife of God's covenant" (Isa 54:5; Jer 3:14; Hos 2:19-20; Mal 2:14).

thou . . . mine-- (Exo 19:5; Jer 2:2).

2 Go [01980] and cry [07121] in the ears [0241] of Jerusalem [03389], saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; I remember [02142] thee, the kindness [02617] of thy youth [05271], the love [0160] of thine espousals [03623], when thou wentest [03212] after [0310] me in the wilderness [04057], in a land [0776] that was not sown [02232].
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey [08085] my voice [06963] indeed [08085], and keep [08104] my covenant [01285], then ye shall be a peculiar treasure [05459] unto me above all people [05971]: for all the earth [0776] is mine:
14 Yet ye say [0559], Wherefore [04100]? Because the LORD [03068] hath been witness [05749] between thee and the wife [0802] of thy youth [05271], against whom thou hast dealt treacherously [0898]: yet is she thy companion [02278], and the wife [0802] of thy covenant [01285].
19 And I will betroth [0781] thee unto me for ever [05769]; yea, I will betroth [0781] thee unto me in righteousness [06664], and in judgment [04941], and in lovingkindness [02617], and in mercies [07356].
20 I will even betroth [0781] thee unto me in faithfulness [0530]: and thou shalt know [03045] the LORD [03068].
14 Turn [07725], O backsliding [07726] children [01121], saith [05002] the LORD [03068]; for I am married [01166] unto you: and I will take [03947] you one [0259] of a city [05892], and two [08147] of a family [04940], and I will bring [0935] you to Zion [06726]:
5 For thy Maker [06213] is thine husband [01166]; the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] is his name [08034]; and thy Redeemer [01350] the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478]; The God [0430] of the whole earth [0776] shall he be called [07121].
1 When Israel [03478] was a child [05288], then I loved [0157] him, and called [07121] my son [01121] out of Egypt [04714].
15 Only the LORD [03068] had a delight [02836] in thy fathers [01] to love [0157] them, and he chose [0977] their seed [02233] after [0310] them, even you above all people [05971], as it is this day [03117].
37 And because he loved [0157] thy fathers [01], therefore he chose [0977] their seed [02233] after [0310] them, and brought thee out [03318] in his sight [06440] with his mighty [01419] power [03581] out of Egypt [04714];
9 And he said [0559], Who art thou? And she answered [0559], I am Ruth [07327] thine handmaid [0519]: spread [06566] therefore thy skirt [03671] over thine handmaid [0519]; for thou art a near kinsman [01350].
2 I have loved [0157] you, saith [05002] the LORD [03068]. Yet ye say [0559], Wherein hast thou loved [0157] us? Was not Esau [06215] Jacob's [03290] brother [0251]? saith [0559] the LORD [03068]: yet I loved [0157] Jacob [03290],
3 The LORD [03068] hath appeared [07200] of old [07350] unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved [0157] thee with an everlasting [05769] love [0160]: therefore with lovingkindness [02617] have I drawn [04900] thee.
3 Because of the savour [07381] of thy good [02896] ointments [08081] thy name [08034] is as ointment [08081] poured forth [07324], therefore do the virgins [05959] love [0157] thee.
4 Draw [04900] me, we will run [07323] after [0310] thee: the king [04428] hath brought [0935] me into his chambers [02315]: we will be glad [01523] and rejoice [08055] in thee, we will remember [02142] thy love [01730] more than wine [03196]: the upright [04339] love [0157] thee.
5 I am black [07838], but comely [05000], O ye daughters [01323] of Jerusalem [03389], as the tents [0168] of Kedar [06938], as the curtains [03407] of Solomon [08010].
6 Look [07200] not upon me, because I am black [07840], because the sun [08121] hath looked [07805] upon me: my mother's [0517] children [01121] were angry [02787] with me; they made [07760] me the keeper [05201] of the vineyards [03754]; but mine own vineyard [03754] have I not kept [05201].
6 And [1161] God [2316] spake [2980] on this wise [3779], That [3754] his [846] seed [4690] should [2071] sojourn [3941] in [1722] a strange [245] land [1093]; and [2532] that they should bring [1402] them [846] into bondage [1402], and [2532] entreat them evil [2559] four hundred [5071] years [2094].
7 And [2532] the nation [1484] to whom [3739] [1437] they shall be in bondage [1398] will [2919] I [1473] judge [2919], said [2036] God [2316]: and [2532] after [3326] that [5023] shall they come forth [1831], and [2532] serve [3000] me [3427] in [1722] this [5129] place [5117].
13 And he said [0559] unto Abram [087], Know [03045] of a surety [03045] that thy seed [02233] shall be a stranger [01616] in a land [0776] that is not theirs, and shall serve [05647] them; and they shall afflict [06031] them four [0702] hundred [03967] years [08141];
14 And also that nation [01471], whom they shall serve [05647], will I judge [01777]: and afterward [0310] [03651] shall they come out [03318] with great [01419] substance [07399].
10 My beloved [01730] spake [06030], and said [0559] unto me, Rise up [06965], my love [07474], my fair one [03303], and come away [03212].
11 For, lo, the winter [05638] is past [05674], the rain [01653] is over [02498] and gone [01980];
12 The flowers [05339] appear [07200] on the earth [0776]; the time [06256] of the singing [02158] of birds is come [05060], and the voice [06963] of the turtle [08449] is heard [08085] in our land [0776];
13 The fig tree [08384] putteth forth [02590] her green figs [06291], and the vines [01612] with the tender grape [05563] give [05414] a good smell [07381]. Arise [06965], my love [07474], my fair one [03303], and come away [03212].
27 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Write [03789] thou these words [01697]: for after the tenor [06310] of these words [01697] I have made [03772] a covenant [01285] with thee and with Israel [03478].
9 And he said [0559], Who art thou? And she answered [0559], I am Ruth [07327] thine handmaid [0519]: spread [06566] therefore thy skirt [03671] over thine handmaid [0519]; for thou art a near kinsman [01350].
9 And he said [0559], Who art thou? And she answered [0559], I am Ruth [07327] thine handmaid [0519]: spread [06566] therefore thy skirt [03671] over thine handmaid [0519]; for thou art a near kinsman [01350].
