Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
ran and returned--Incessant, restless motion indicates the plenitude of life in these cherubim; so in Rev 4:8, "they rest not day or night" (Zac 4:10).
flash of lightning--rather, as distinct from "lightning" (Eze 1:13), "the meteor flash," or sheet lightning [FAIRBAIRN]. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Ran - They ran into the lower world, to do what was to be done there: and when they had done, returned as a flash of lightning, to the upper world, to the vision of God. Thus we should be in the affairs of this world: though we run into them we must not repose in them, but our souls must presently return like lightning, to God, their rest and center. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The living creatures ran and returned - They had a circular movement; they were in rapid motion, but did not increase their distance from the spectator. So I think this should be understood. |
13 As for the likeness [01823] of the living creatures [02416], their appearance [04758] was like burning [01197] coals [01513] of fire [0784], and like the appearance [04758] of lamps [03940]: it went up and down [01980] among the living creatures [02416]; and the fire [0784] was bright [05051], and out of the fire [0784] went forth [03318] lightning [01300].
10 For who hath despised [0936] the day [03117] of small things [06996]? for they shall rejoice [08055], and shall see [07200] the plummet [068] [0913] in the hand [03027] of Zerubbabel [02216] with those seven [07651]; they are the eyes [05869] of the LORD [03068], which run to and fro [07751] through the whole earth [0776].
8 And [2532] the four [5064] beasts [2226] had [2192] each [303] [1520] of them [2596] [1438] six [1803] wings [4420] about [2943] him; and [2532] they were full [1073] of eyes [3788] within [2081]: and [2532] they rest [372] not [3756] [2192] day [2250] and [2532] night [3571], saying [3004], Holy [40], holy [40], holy [40], Lord [2962] God [2316] Almighty [3841], which [3588] was [2258] [3801], and [2532] is [5607] [3801], and [2532] is to come [2064] [3801].
