Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
To the admonitory imper. there follows here a second, as Pro 4:4; Pro 20:13; Amo 5:4; Ch2 20:20, instead of which also the perf. consec. might stand; the counsellor wishes, with the good to which he advises, at the same time to present its good results. שׂכל is (Sa1 25:3) the appearance, for the Arab. shakl means forma, as uniting or binding the lineaments or contours into one figure, σχῆμα, according to which שׂכל טוב may be interpreted of the pleasing and advantageous impression which the well-built external appearance of a man makes, as an image of that which his internal excellence produces; thus, favourable view, friendly judgment, good reputation (Ewald, Hitzig, Zckler). But everywhere else (Pro 13:15; Psa 111:10; Ch2 30:22) this phrase means good, i.e., fine, well-becoming insight, or prudence; and שׂכל has in the language of the Mishle no other meaning than intellectus, which proceeds from the inwardly forming activity of the mind. He obtains favour in the eyes of God and man, to whom favour on both sides is shown; he obtains refined prudence, to whom it is on both sides adjudicated. It is unnecessary, with Ewald and Hitzig, to assign the two objects to God and men. In the eyes of both at the same time, he who carries love and faithfulness in his heart appears as one to whom חן and שׂכל טוב must be adjudicated. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Understanding - Whereby to know thy duty, and to discern between good and evil. Of God - Grace or favour with God, and that understanding which is good in God's sight. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
So shalt thou find favor - Thou shalt be acceptable to God, and thou shalt enjoy a sense of his approbation.
And good understanding - Men shall weigh thy character and conduct; and by this appreciate thy motives, and give thee credit for sincerity and uprightness. Though religion is frequently persecuted, and religious people suffer at first where they are not fully known; yet a truly religious and benevolent character will in general be prized wherever it is well known. The envy of men is a proof of the excellence of that which they envy. |
2 Thou art fairer [03302] than the children [01121] of men [0120]: grace [02580] is poured [03332] into thy lips [08193]: therefore God [0430] hath blessed [01288] thee for ever [05769].
11 He that loveth [0157] pureness [02890] [02889] of heart [03820], for the grace [02580] of his lips [08193] the king [04428] shall be his friend [07453].
52 And [2532] Jesus [2424] increased [4298] in wisdom [4678] and [2532] stature [2244], and [2532] in favour [5485] with [3844] God [2316] and [2532] man [444].
22 And Hezekiah [03169] spake [01696] comfortably [03820] unto all the Levites [03881] that taught [07919] the good [02896] knowledge [07922] of the LORD [03068]: and they did eat [0398] throughout the feast [04150] seven [07651] days [03117], offering [02076] peace [08002] offerings [02077], and making confession [03034] to the LORD [03068] God [0430] of their fathers [01].
10 The fear [03374] of the LORD [03068] is the beginning [07225] of wisdom [02451]: a good [02896] understanding [07922] have all they that do [06213] his commandments: his praise [08416] endureth [05975] for ever [05703].
15 Good [02896] understanding [07922] giveth [05414] favour [02580]: but the way [01870] of transgressors [0898] is hard [0386].
3 Now the name [08034] of the man [0376] was Nabal [05037]; and the name [08034] of his wife [0802] Abigail [026]: and she was a woman [0802] of good [02896] understanding [07922], and of a beautiful [03303] countenance [08389]: but the man [0376] was churlish [07186] and evil [07451] in his doings [04611]; and he was of the house of Caleb [03614].
20 And they rose early [07925] in the morning [01242], and went forth [03318] into the wilderness [04057] of Tekoa [08620]: and as they went forth [03318], Jehoshaphat [03092] stood [05975] and said [0559], Hear [08085] me, O Judah [03063], and ye inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389]; Believe [0539] in the LORD [03068] your God [0430], so shall ye be established [0539]; believe [0539] his prophets [05030], so shall ye prosper [06743].
4 For thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] unto the house [01004] of Israel [03478], Seek [01875] ye me, and ye shall live [02421]:
13 Love [0157] not sleep [08142], lest thou come to poverty [03423]; open [06491] thine eyes [05869], and thou shalt be satisfied [07646] with bread [03899].
