A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea-shore, &c.--The tide threw them up and left multitudes of corpses on the beach; a result that brought greater infamy on the Egyptians, but that tended, on the other hand, to enhance the triumph of the Israelites, and doubtless enriched them with arms, which they had not before. The locality of this famous passage has not yet been, and probably never will be, satisfactorily fixed. Some place it in the immediate neighborhood of Suez; where, they say, the part of the sea is most likely to be affected by "a strong east wind" [Exo 14:21]; where the road from the defile of Migdol (now Muktala) leads directly to this point; and where the sea, not above two miles broad, could be crossed in a short time. The vast majority, however, who have examined the spot, reject this opinion, and fix the passage, as does local tradition, about ten or twelve miles further down the shore at Wady Tawarik. "The time of the miracle was the whole night, at the season of the year, too, when the night would be about its average length. The sea at that point extends from six and a half to eight miles in breadth. There was thus ample time for the passage of the Israelites from any part of the valley, especially considering their excitement and animation by the gracious and wonderful interposition of Providence in their behalf" [WILSON].

21 And Moses [04872] stretched out [05186] his hand [03027] over the sea [03220]; and the LORD [03068] caused the sea [03220] to go [03212] back by a strong [05794] east [06921] wind [07307] all that night [03915], and made [07760] the sea [03220] dry [02724] land, and the waters [04325] were divided [01234].
2 Wherein [1722] [3739] in time past [4218] ye walked [4043] according to [2596] the course [165] of this [5127] world [2889], according to [2596] the prince [758] of the power [1849] of the air [109], the spirit [4151] that now [3568] worketh [1754] in [1722] the children [5207] of disobedience [543]:
2 For [1063] the law [3551] of the Spirit [4151] of life [2222] in [1722] Christ [5547] Jesus [2424] hath made [1659] me [3165] free [1659] from [575] the law [3551] of sin [266] and [2532] death [2288].
18 Forasmuch as ye know [1492] that [3754] ye were [3084] not [3756] redeemed [3084] with corruptible things [5349], as silver [694] and [2228] gold [5553], from [1537] your [5216] vain [3152] conversation [391] received by tradition from your fathers [3970];
24 Being justified [1344] freely [1432] by his [846] grace [5485] through [1223] the redemption [629] that is in [1722] Christ [5547] Jesus [2424]:
20 And the Redeemer [01350] shall come [0935] to Zion [06726], and unto them that turn [07725] from transgression [06588] in Jacob [03290], saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
2 For [1063] the law [3551] of the Spirit [4151] of life [2222] in [1722] Christ [5547] Jesus [2424] hath made [1659] me [3165] free [1659] from [575] the law [3551] of sin [266] and [2532] death [2288].
14 And it shall be when thy son [01121] asketh [07592] thee in time to come [04279], saying [0559], What is this? that thou shalt say [0559] unto him, By strength [02392] of hand [03027] the LORD [03068] brought us out [03318] from Egypt [04714], from the house [01004] of bondage [05650]:
6 Wherefore [03651] say [0559] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], I am the LORD [03068], and I will bring [03318] you out from under the burdens [05450] of the Egyptians [04714], and I will rid [05337] you out of their bondage [05656], and I will redeem [01350] you with a stretched [05186] out arm [02220], and with great [01419] judgments [08201]:
18 Forasmuch as ye know [1492] that [3754] ye were [3084] not [3756] redeemed [3084] with corruptible things [5349], as silver [694] and [2228] gold [5553], from [1537] your [5216] vain [3152] conversation [391] received by tradition from your fathers [3970];
27 That ye shall say [0559], It is the sacrifice [02077] of the LORD'S [03068] passover [06453], who passed [06452] over the houses [01004] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] in Egypt [04714], when he smote [05062] the Egyptians [04714], and delivered [05337] our houses [01004]. And the people [05971] bowed the head [06915] and worshipped [07812].
23 For the LORD [03068] will pass through [05674] to smite [05062] the Egyptians [04714]; and when he seeth [07200] the blood [01818] upon the lintel [04947], and on the two [08147] side posts [04201], the LORD [03068] will pass over [06452] the door [06607], and will not suffer [05414] the destroyer [07843] to come [0935] in unto your houses [01004] to smite [05062] you.
13 And the blood [01818] shall be to you for a token [0226] upon the houses [01004] where ye are: and when I see [07200] the blood [01818], I will pass [06452] over you, and the plague [05063] shall not be upon you to destroy [04889] you, when I smite [05221] the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
17 For [1063] God [2316] sent [649] not [3756] his [846] Son [5207] into [1519] the world [2889] to [2443] condemn [2919] the world [2889]; but [235] that [2443] the world [2889] through [1223] him [846] might be saved [4982].
16 For [1063] God [2316] so [3779] loved [25] the world [2889], that [5620] he gave [1325] his [846] only begotten [3439] Son [5207], that [2443] whosoever [3956] believeth [4100] in [1519] him [846] should [622] not [3361] perish [622], but [235] have [2192] everlasting [166] life [2222].
2 And the woman [0802] conceived [02029], and bare [03205] a son [01121]: and when she saw [07200] him that he was a goodly [02896] child, she hid [06845] him three [07969] months [03391].
8 And I am come down [03381] to deliver [05337] them out of the hand [03027] of the Egyptians [04714], and to bring [05927] them up out of that land [0776] unto a good [02896] land [0776] and a large [07342], unto a land [0776] flowing [02100] with milk [02461] and honey [01706]; unto the place [04725] of the Canaanites [03669], and the Hittites [02850], and the Amorites [0567], and the Perizzites [06522], and the Hivites [02340], and the Jebusites [02983].
7 And the LORD [03068] said [0559], I have surely [07200] seen [07200] the affliction [06040] of my people [05971] which are in Egypt [04714], and have heard [08085] their cry [06818] by reason [06440] of their taskmasters [05065]; for I know [03045] their sorrows [04341];
29 By faith [4102] they passed through [1224] the Red [2063] sea [2281] as [5613] by [1223] dry [3584] land: which [3739] the Egyptians [124] assaying [3984] to do [2983] were drowned [2666].
17 And I, behold, I will harden [02388] the hearts [03820] of the Egyptians [04714], and they shall follow [0935] them [0310]: and I will get me honour [03513] upon Pharaoh [06547], and upon all his host [02428], upon his chariots [07393], and upon his horsemen [06571].
4 And I will harden [02388] Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820], that he shall follow [07291] after [0310] them; and I will be honoured [03513] upon Pharaoh [06547], and upon all his host [02428]; that the Egyptians [04714] may know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068]. And they did [06213] so.
31 And Israel [03478] saw [07200] that great [01419] work [03027] which the LORD [03068] did [06213] upon the Egyptians [04714]: and the people [05971] feared [03372] the LORD [03068], and believed [0539] the LORD [03068], and his servant [05650] Moses [04872].
