Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
The attending illustrations of God's awful justice on enemies (Psa 83:14) are seen in the disclosures of His almighty power on the elements of nature (compare Psa 46:2; Psa 77:17; Hab 3:6, &c.). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
A fire goeth before him - See Psa 18:13, note; Psa 50:3, note.
And burneth up his enemies round about - Is especially directed against his foes. That is, he manifests himself as a just God, inflicting vengeance on his enemies. He comes to reign, and in his reign all his foes will be destroyed. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
A fire goeth before him - Literally, this and the following verse may refer to the electric fluid, or to manifestations of the Divine displeasure, in which, by means of ethereal fire, God consumed his enemies. But fire is generally represented as an accompaniment of the appearances of the Supreme Being. He appeared on Mount Sinai in the midst of fire, thunder, and lightninys, Exo 19:16-18. Daniel, Dan 7:9, Dan 7:10, represents the Sovereign Judge as being on a throne which was a fiery flame, and the wheels of his chariot like burning fire; and a fiery streamer issuing from it, and coming forth from before him. St. Paul tells us (Th2 1:8) that the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in faming fire; and St. Peter, (Pe2 3:7, Pe2 3:10, Pe2 3:11), that when the Lord shall come to judgment the heavens and the earth shall be destroyed by fire. the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, the elements melt with fervent heat, and the earth and its works be burnt up. Here then, will appear: -
"Our God in grandeur, and our world on fire."
Burneth up his enemies round about - The fire is his pioneer which destroys all the hinderances in his way, and makes him a plain passage. |
6 He stood [05975], and measured [04128] the earth [0776]: he beheld [07200], and drove asunder [05425] the nations [01471]; and the everlasting [05703] mountains [02042] were scattered [06327], the perpetual [05769] hills [01389] did bow [07817]: his ways [01979] are everlasting [05769].
17 The clouds [05645] poured out [02229] water [04325]: the skies [07834] sent out [05414] a sound [06963]: thine arrows [02687] also went abroad [01980].
2 Therefore will not we fear [03372], though the earth [0776] be removed [04171], and though the mountains [02022] be carried [04131] into the midst [03820] of the sea [03220];
14 As the fire [0784] burneth [01197] a wood [03293], and as the flame [03852] setteth [03857] the mountains [02022] on fire [03857];
3 Our God [0430] shall come [0935], and shall not keep silence [02790]: a fire [0784] shall devour [0398] before [06440] him, and it shall be very [03966] tempestuous [08175] round about [05439] him.
13 The LORD [03068] also thundered [07481] in the heavens [08064], and the Highest [05945] gave [05414] his voice [06963]; hail [01259] stones and coals [01513] of fire [0784].
11 Seeing then [3767] that all [3956] these things [5130] shall be dissolved [3089], what manner [4217] of persons ought [1163] ye [5209] to be [5225] in [1722] all holy [40] conversation [391] and [2532] godliness [2150],
10 But [1161] the day [2250] of the Lord [2962] will come [2240] as [5613] a thief [2812] in [1722] the night [3571]; in [1722] the which [3739] the heavens [3772] shall pass away [3928] with a great noise [4500], and [1161] the elements [4747] shall melt [3089] with fervent heat [2741], the earth [1093] also [2532] and [2532] the works [2041] that are therein [1722] [846] shall be burned up [2618].
7 But [1161] the heavens [3772] and [2532] the earth [1093], which are now [3568], by the same [846] word [3056] are [1526] kept in store [2343], reserved [5083] unto fire [4442] against [1519] the day [2250] of judgment [2920] and [2532] perdition [684] of ungodly [765] men [444].
8 In [1722] flaming [5395] fire [4442] taking [1325] vengeance [1557] on them that know [1492] not [3361] God [2316], and [2532] that obey [5219] not [3361] the gospel [2098] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547]:
10 A fiery [05135] stream [05103] issued [05047] and came forth [05312] from [04481] before [06925] him: thousand [0506] thousands [0506] ministered [08120] unto him, and ten thousand [07240] times ten thousand [07240] stood [06966] before [06925] him: the judgment [01780] was set [03488], and the books [05609] were opened [06606].
9 I beheld [01934] [02370] till [05705] the thrones [03764] were cast down [07412], and the Ancient [06268] of days [03118] did sit [03488], whose garment [03831] was white [02358] as snow [08517], and the hair [08177] of his head [07217] like the pure [05343] wool [06015]: his throne [03764] was like the fiery [05135] flame [07631], and his wheels [01535] as burning [01815] fire [05135].
16 And it came to pass on the third [07992] day [03117] in the morning [01242], that there were thunders [06963] and lightnings [01300], and a thick [03515] cloud [06051] upon the mount [02022], and the voice [06963] of the trumpet [07782] exceeding [03966] loud [02389]; so that all the people [05971] that was in the camp [04264] trembled [02729].
17 And Moses [04872] brought forth [03318] the people [05971] out of the camp [04264] to meet [07125] with God [0430]; and they stood [03320] at the nether [08482] part of the mount [02022].
18 And mount [02022] Sinai [05514] was altogether on a smoke [06225], because [06440] [0834] the LORD [03068] descended [03381] upon it in fire [0784]: and the smoke [06227] thereof ascended [05927] as the smoke [06227] of a furnace [03536], and the whole mount [02022] quaked [02729] greatly [03966].
