Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834]
Moreover by them is thy servant warned - The word used here - זהר zâhar - means, properly, to be bright, to shine; then, to cause to shine, to make light; and then, to admonish, to instruct, to warn. The essential idea here is, to throw light on a subject, so as to show it clearly; that is, to make the duty plain, and the consequences plain. Compare Lev 15:31; Eze 3:18; Eze 33:7. The word is rendered admonished in Ecc 4:13; Ecc 12:12; warn, and warned, in Psa 19:11; Kg2 6:10; Ch2 19:10; Eze 3:17-21; Eze 33:3-9; teach, in Exo 18:20; and shine, in Dan 12:3. It does not occur elsewhere.

And in keeping of them there is great reward - Either as the result of keeping them, or in the act of keeping them. In the former sense it would mean that a careful observance of the laws of God will be followed by rewards hereafter; in the other sense, that the act of keeping them will be attended with so much peace and happiness as to constitute of itself an ample reward. In both these senses is the assertion here made a correct one. Both will be found to be true. It is not easy to determine which is the true sense. Perhaps the language implies both. The phrase "thy servant" refers to the author of the psalm, and shows that in this part of the psalm, in speaking of the "sweetness" of the law of God, and of its value as perceived by the soul, and of the effect of keeping that law, he is referring to his own experience.

3 And they that be wise [07919] shall shine [02094] as the brightness [02096] of the firmament [07549]; and they that turn many [07227] to righteousness [06663] as the stars [03556] for ever [05769] and ever [05703].
20 And thou shalt teach [02094] [0853] them ordinances [02706] and laws [08451], and shalt shew [03045] them the way [01870] wherein they must walk [03212], and the work [04639] that they must do [06213].
3 If when he seeth [07200] the sword [02719] come [0935] upon the land [0776], he blow [08628] the trumpet [07782], and warn [02094] the people [05971];
4 Then whosoever [08085] heareth [08085] the sound [06963] of the trumpet [07782], and taketh not warning [02094]; if the sword [02719] come [0935], and take him away [03947], his blood [01818] shall be upon his own head [07218].
5 He heard [08085] the sound [06963] of the trumpet [07782], and took not warning [02094]; his blood [01818] shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning [02094] shall deliver [04422] his soul [05315].
6 But if the watchman [06822] see [07200] the sword [02719] come [0935], and blow [08628] not the trumpet [07782], and the people [05971] be not warned [02094]; if the sword [02719] come [0935], and take [03947] any person [05315] from among them, he is taken away [03947] in his iniquity [05771]; but his blood [01818] will I require [01875] at the watchman's [06822] hand [03027].
7 So thou, O son [01121] of man [0120], I have set [05414] thee a watchman [06822] unto the house [01004] of Israel [03478]; therefore thou shalt hear [08085] the word [01697] at my mouth [06310], and warn [02094] them from me.
8 When I say [0559] unto the wicked [07563], O wicked [07563] man, thou shalt surely [04191] die [04191]; if thou dost not speak [01696] to warn [02094] the wicked [07563] from his way [01870], that wicked [07563] man shall die [04191] in his iniquity [05771]; but his blood [01818] will I require [01245] at thine hand [03027].
9 Nevertheless, if thou warn [02094] the wicked [07563] of his way [01870] to turn [07725] from it; if he do not turn [07725] from his way [01870], he shall die [04191] in his iniquity [05771]; but thou hast delivered [05337] thy soul [05315].
17 Son [01121] of man [0120], I have made [05414] thee a watchman [06822] unto the house [01004] of Israel [03478]: therefore hear [08085] the word [01697] at my mouth [06310], and give them warning [02094] from me.
18 When I say [0559] unto the wicked [07563], Thou shalt surely [04191] die [04191]; and thou givest him not warning [02094], nor speakest [01696] to warn [02094] the wicked [07563] from his wicked [07563] way [01870], to save his life [02421]; the same wicked [07563] man shall die [04191] in his iniquity [05771]; but his blood [01818] will I require [01245] at thine hand [03027].
19 Yet if thou warn [02094] the wicked [07563], and he turn [07725] not from his wickedness [07562], nor from his wicked [07563] way [01870], he shall die [04191] in his iniquity [05771]; but thou hast delivered [05337] thy soul [05315].
20 Again [07725], When a righteous [06662] man doth turn [07725] from his righteousness [06664], and commit [06213] iniquity [05766], and I lay [05414] a stumblingblock [04383] before [06440] him, he shall die [04191]: because thou hast not given him warning [02094], he shall die [04191] in his sin [02403], and his righteousness [06666] which he hath done [06213] shall not be remembered [02142]; but his blood [01818] will I require [01245] at thine hand [03027].
21 Nevertheless if thou warn [02094] the righteous [06662] man, that the righteous [06662] sin [02398] not, and he doth not sin [02398], he shall surely [02421] live [02421], because he is warned [02094]; also thou hast delivered [05337] thy soul [05315].
10 And what cause [07379] soever shall come [0935] to you of your brethren [0251] that dwell [03427] in their cities [05892], between blood [01818] and blood [01818], between law [08451] and commandment [04687], statutes [02706] and judgments [04941], ye shall even warn [02094] them that they trespass [0816] not against the LORD [03068], and so wrath [07110] come upon you, and upon your brethren [0251]: this [03541] do [06213], and ye shall not trespass [0816].
10 And the king [04428] of Israel [03478] sent [07971] to the place [04725] which the man [0376] of God [0430] told [0559] him and warned [02094] him of, and saved [08104] himself there, not once [0259] nor twice [08147].
11 Moreover by them is thy servant [05650] warned [02094]: and in keeping [08104] of them there is great [07227] reward [06118].
12 And further [03148], by these [01992], my son [01121], be admonished [02094]: of making [06213] many [07235] books [05612] there is no end [07093]; and much [07235] study [03854] is a weariness [03024] of the flesh [01320].
13 Better [02896] is a poor [04542] and a wise [02450] child [03206] than an old [02205] and foolish [03684] king [04428], who will [03045] no more be admonished [02094].
7 So thou, O son [01121] of man [0120], I have set [05414] thee a watchman [06822] unto the house [01004] of Israel [03478]; therefore thou shalt hear [08085] the word [01697] at my mouth [06310], and warn [02094] them from me.
31 Thus shall ye separate [05144] the children [01121] of Israel [03478] from their uncleanness [02932]; that they die [04191] not in their uncleanness [02932], when they defile [02930] my tabernacle [04908] that is among [08432] them.
