Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
They buried him in the city of David among the kings - This unparalleled honor, due in part to the respect felt for Jehoiada's religious character, was probably, also, in part attributable to his connection with the royal family through his wife Ch2 22:11, and to the fact that, for 10 or 12 years, he had practically held the kingly office.
Toward his house - "i. e. toward God's house," the temple. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Israel - In Judah, which was an eminent part of Israel, and the only part of it which owned God, or was owned by God as his Israel, to whom therefore he often appropriates this name. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
They buried him - among the kings - He had, in fact, been king in Judah; for Joash, who appears to have been a weak man, was always under his tutelage. Jehoiada governed the state in the name of the king; and his being buried among the kings is a proof of the high estimation in which he was held among the people. |
11 But Jehoshabeath [03090], the daughter [01323] of the king [04428], took [03947] Joash [03101] the son [01121] of Ahaziah [0274], and stole [01589] him from among [08432] the king's [04428] sons [01121] that were slain [04191], and put [05414] him and his nurse [03243] in a bedchamber [02315] [04296]. So Jehoshabeath [03090], the daughter [01323] of king [04428] Jehoram [03088], the wife [0802] of Jehoiada [03077] the priest [03548], (for she was the sister [0269] of Ahaziah [0274],) hid [05641] him from [06440] Athaliah [06271], so that she slew [04191] him not.
