Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Gone away - Rather, went up to battle (Sa2 5:19; Kg2 3:21, etc.) against them. These words and what follows as far as "troop" Sa2 23:11 have fallen out of the text in Chronicles. The effect of this is to omit EIeazar's feat, as here described, to attribute to him Shammah's victory, to misplace the flight of the Israelites, and to omit Shammah altogether from the list of David's mighty men. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Gone away - That is, fled away, Ch1 11:13, being dismayed at the approach of their enemies. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
When they defied the Philistines that were there gathered - This is supposed to refer to the war in which David slew Goliath. |

21 And when all the Moabites [04124] heard [08085] that the kings [04428] were come up [05927] to fight [03898] against them, they gathered [06817] all that were able to put [02296] on armour [02290], and upward [04605], and stood [05975] in the border [01366].
19 And David [01732] enquired [07592] of the LORD [03068], saying [0559], Shall I go up [05927] to the Philistines [06430]? wilt thou deliver [05414] them into mine hand [03027]? And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto David [01732], Go up [05927]: for I will doubtless [05414] deliver [05414] the Philistines [06430] into thine hand [03027].
13 He was with David [01732] at Pasdammim [06450], and there the Philistines [06430] were gathered together [0622] to battle [04421], where was a parcel [02513] of ground [07704] full [04392] of barley [08184]; and the people [05971] fled [05127] from before [06440] the Philistines [06430].
