Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Joab blew the trumpet, . . . and held back the people--Knowing that by the death of the usurper there was no occasion for further bloodshed, he put an end to the pursuit and thereby evinced the temperate policy of his conduct. However harsh and unfeeling to the king Joab may appear, there can be no doubt that he acted the part of a wise statesman in regarding the peace and welfare of the kingdom more than his master's private inclinations, which were opposed to strict justice as well as his own interests. Absalom deserved to die by the divine law (Deu 21:18, Deu 21:21), as well as being an enemy to his king and country; and no time was more fitting than when he met that death in open battle. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Blew the trumpet - To stop the pursuit and slaughter Sa2 2:28; Sa2 20:22. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Immediately afterwards Joab stopped any further pursuit, "for Joab spared the people," i.e., he wanted to spare them. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Joab blew the trumpet - He knew that the rebellion was now extinguished by the death of Absalom; and was not willing that any farther slaughter should be made of the deluded people. |
21 And all the men [0582] of his city [05892] shall stone [07275] him with stones [068], that he die [04191]: so shalt thou put [01197] evil [07451] away [01197] from among [07130] you; and all Israel [03478] shall hear [08085], and fear [03372].
18 If a man [0376] have a stubborn [05637] and rebellious [04784] son [01121], which will not obey [08085] the voice [06963] of his father [01], or the voice [06963] of his mother [0517], and that, when they have chastened [03256] him, will not hearken [08085] unto them:
22 Then the woman [0802] went [0935] unto all the people [05971] in her wisdom [02451]. And they cut off [03772] the head [07218] of Sheba [07652] the son [01121] of Bichri [01075], and cast [07993] it out to Joab [03097]. And he blew [08628] a trumpet [07782], and they retired [06327] from the city [05892], every man [0376] to his tent [0168]. And Joab [03097] returned [07725] to Jerusalem [03389] unto the king [04428].
28 So Joab [03097] blew [08628] a trumpet [07782], and all the people [05971] stood still [05975], and pursued [07291] after [0310] Israel [03478] no more, neither fought [03898] they any more [03254].
